Thorton Gap to Pinnacles Picnic Area (5.30 Miles)

We hiked this section on November 5, 2006.

We were supposed to meet the Northern Virginia hiking club at Panorama between 9:30 to 10:30 AM but no one showed up! So, we headed out on the trail at 10:30 hoping to hitch hike back to our car.

The hike up Marys Rock was steep and a bit slippery because of all the leaves.

We were really glad we did not have to descend from Marys Rock. We slid on the leaves all day long!

We stopped at Byrds Net #3 for a break. The shelter is for day use only. The shelter floor was concrete and covered in leaves. There was also a stone fireplace.

We ate lunch at The Pinnacles and it was really cold! We were glad that we brought along a thermos of hot coffee.

Our first attempt at hitch hiking was a success! Carla, Horatio, and 2 dogs (Riley and Leif) picked us up in their mini-van and drove us back to our car. Dirigo actually knows Carla's mom.
