US 58 (Feathercamp Branch) to Damascus (sign) (6.00 Miles)

We hiked this section on May 15, 2008.

We drove the car to where the AT crosses over Rt58 (Straight branch) and hiked into town, where we were to meet Amy & Alex and get a ride back to the car.

We came to the blue blaze to Feathercamp Trail.

Lots of rhododendrons in this area, but none were in bloom yet. We came across a very beautiful waterfall, and found many trails leading off the AT.

We came to a campsite but someone left a large cardboard box there. I would have carried it out but it was too large to carry.

Finally, amongst the many rhododendron, there were a few in bloom. They are very beautiful, and smelled real nice.

I made a phone call from the top of the ridge to work. Yes, I got phone service.
I guess the Gods needed to be on the trail, as we came across a sign on a tree that said "Go in peace."

We went down over some stairs to where the trail crossed Rt58 again, and we hiked over to where the AT and the Creeper trail become one. The Creeper Trail is a bike path.
We met a squirrelly looking guy on the Creeper Trail. Not real friendly and smelled of alcohol.

OMG, we hit the motherload – we hiked past a place that sold ice cream!
IceCream
So of course we had to stop and get some. I will never pass up an opportunity to have ice cream. Can this happen on every hike?

We hiked into town, and went past the caboose near the park in Damascus and we also visited the shelter in the park.
Train

There was a sign on it that said "Do not use".

We had our pictures taken under the sign welcoming hikers to Damascus. This would be the first thing you saw if you hiked Northbound into Damascus.
