The staff at the Discovery Center told us that there was only one walking route to the top of the mountain and that it was under tree cover. We were happy about this because the weather service was predicting afternoon thunderstorms.

It was almost 80 degrees when we started hiking and we were happy to be under tree cover.

The path was mostly gravel with some stairs. There were several benches along the way and we took our time. It was wonderful to see so many families out on the trail. There were people of all ages and sizes. Even when people had to stop to take a break, they had smiles on their faces.

As we got closer to the top, the air got cooler and the wind picked up. When we reached the observation platform, we noticed a sign for cold drinks for sale! Oh yeah, some enterprising guy drove his 4 wheeler up the horse trail to sell drinks.

Cullowhee did great in the heat and seemed to enjoy all the attention from the other hiker. We took turns staying with Cullowhee while we each took a turn at rock scrambling. We only went out for a bit because it was too hot in the sun.

We thought we heard some thunder rumbling in the distance so we hustled down the mountain. Once we got back to the Discovery Center, we looked back up the mountain and saw people still rock scrambling.
