Carl Newhall Lean-to to Logan Brook Lean-to (7.2 miles)

We did this hike on August 11, 2008.

We broke camp around 8 AM and immediately started climbing up Gulf Hagas Mountain (2683 FT). As we were climbing up Gulf Hagas Mountain we ran across the MCC working on the trail.

We took a break at the beautiful Sidney Tappan Campsite and listened to the NOAA weather forecast for the afternoon – scattered thunderstorms with possible hail.

We were passed by Lil Cubit as we were climbing up West Peak (3181 FT) and she told us that Barefoot Sage was in Maine. At some point during the climb up Hay Mountain (3244 FT), we were passed by 4 male thru hikers.

While we were taking a break before ascending White Cap Mountain (3644 FT), we chatted with the
4 male thru hikers that passed us on Hay Mountain (one of the hikers was named Barefoot and he was raising money for Keep America Beautiful, another hiker was named Mouth).

The view from White Cap Mountain was beautiful but we were worried about thunderstorms so we did not stay long.

We arrived at the Logan Brook Lean-to sometime after 5 PM. The Lean-to is near a beautiful stream with very cold water. Just up the hill from the shelter another group of kids from the MCC had set up their camp.

The other people in the shelter were SOBO section hikers and there one guy who was already asleep in this tarp tent when we arrived. Shoe and Fairway stayed in the shelter and everyone else pitched their tents.
