We did this hike on September 10, 2006.
We left one car in the parking lot at Penmar in the morning; the place was completely empty. Then we drove the other car to Raven Rock Hollow Road to start the hike.
We stopped to take pictures at the Devils Racecourse Shelter. There were nice tent sites and a fire ring near the shelter but the privy was really icky!
We had lunch at High Rock which is used as a launching site for hang gliders.
High Rock has a nice big parking lot and there were lots of visitors. We met a nice lady associated with the German Shepherd rescue society of Maryland. Python's attempt to unload Zero failed again.
We tried out the JetBoil for the first time; it is AWESOME. We ate freeze dried chicken & rice and lasagna. Note to self – use less water the next time we make lasagna.
Okay, somehow we lost the trail and ended up in a field of big boulders!
Actually, the field of boulders was the trail – is this a joke? Several times we had to do a 360 degree turn in order to find the next white blaze. We were extremely happy to exit the boulder field – I think this is where AWOL sprained his ankle on his thru-hike?
Do we hear music?
We heard Big Band music coming from Penmar. Apparently, there is a big dance every Sunday with Big Band music and this place was hopping.
We could have scored some major trail magic today! A couple of nice ladies offered us a ride to our car; we politely declined and told them our car was in the Penmar parking lot. A nice gentlemen told us about his group that is hiking the AT; some members of the group are 80 years old. What wonderful people!
