We hiked this section on May 24, 2012.
We got an early start today because the temperature was suppose to be in the high 70’s. We started hiking at 7:20 and quickly reached Shenandoah Mountain. Unfortunately, there was a lot of trash on top of the mountain. This looks like a local hang out. There was also an American flag painted on the rocks. We did not have any views because we were socked in by clouds.
The ground was nice and soft, the temperature was cool, and there was no rain! What a wonderful day to be on the AT!
Just before reaching the Canopus Lake outlook, we talked with several thru-hikers that we met yesterday (they were hiking with “Drop out”). They told us they stopped early yesterday because of they thought they would get rained on but fortunately they dodged the rain.
We stopped for some pictures at the Canopus Lake outlook. There are several trails in Fahnestock State Park and they have good sign marking the various hiking and snow shoe trails. The snow shoe trail is named “Appalachian Way” and there are several signs on the AT which tell you to turn around if you want to stay on the snow shoe trail.
We reached NY 301 at 9:45 and had a wonderful chat with section hikers “Flatbush” and “Rocky Bottom” who were taking a break. This was the third day in a row that we have encountered these nice gentlemen.” Flashbush” is from Atlanta and “Rocky bottom” is from South Carolina. They met on the trail and exchanged Christmas cards for years before section hiking together. They plan a hike each spring and fall with the goal of 250 miles each year.
We passed “High Guy” from yesterday and several other hikers before reaching a very nice stream with a beauiful waterfall. There was also a hiker getting water from the stream.
We reached Sunk Mine road at 11:13 – this was a paved road with no sign.
We reached the parking lot at Dennytown road just after noon time.
