On a previous hike, a thru-hiker had told us about a mother bear and her cub hanging out near Pass Mountain shelter. We had yet to see a bear in SNP so we were hiking softly and looking all around for bears.

The trail was rather busy today. We met several boy scouts at the Pass Mountain shelter who had hiked ahead of their troop – these boys were carrying several boxes of Gatorade!

Just south of Pass Mountain shelter, a bear came running through the brush on the right side of the trail. As soon as the bear came to the trail and saw us, he climbed the tree with the white blaze to get a better look at us.

The cub climbed up this tree!

After a second, he just ran away to the left side of the trail. Dirigo tried to take a picture but only got the dark spot in the middle of the picture; it really is a bear.

We spent the night at Mathews Arm campground inside of SNP. This was Python's very first voluntary camping experience.

After we set up our campsite, we decided to drive down to Big Meadows to look for bear. As we approached the Big Meadows Lodge, we saw a traffic jam – it was a bear jam. We saw another bear!
