No, we were not hiking the night I took the picture. I never hike at dusk in the park because I do not want to run into a bear while on foot.
Wow! What an incredible capture and you are so fortunate to have been able to see these bears. I am so jealous. I always miss them when I go in October. They’re usually sleeping.
We were just lucky that night! We were driving on Skyline Drive and saw the bears on the side of the road. As soon as we approached, the two cubs ran back into the woods but momma bear just kept eating. The cub in the picture came back to momma within 5 minutes and eventually the second cub came out of the woods. The bears stayed on the side of the road for at least 20 minutes – and fortunately no more cars came by during this time.
Great photos, beats my Deer picture hands down ! Thanks for stopping by my blog.

Thank you! A thru-hiker told us that he saw a grown bear chasing a fawn in the park. He wanted to help the fawn but was afraid of attracting the bear’s attention.
